The Path of Colour Exhibit

September 29 through October 31, 2006

Featuring artist Hugh O'Neill

Lorica Artworks
is pleased to present our fall exhibit called “The Path of Colour” featuring Hugh O'Neill.

HUGH O'NEILL

''Hugh O’Neill is one of those rare discoveries that bring confidence and assurances that great landscape painting is still alive and flourishing. An accomplished contemporary master following the intuitive instincts of last generations"

.... by Bruce Helander - a noted writer on art and the former provost of Rhode Island School of Design.

Hugh O’Neill was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1959. He studied painting at the University of Ulster, Belfast from 1981-1985 spending some of that time studying in Nante France. O’Neill’s approach to his oil painting is direct, bold and figurative. A visual musician who is forever searching for the ultimate melody on canvas, Hugh O’Neill comments:

“Amidst the color and tonal variations that nature provides I stand in awe,.nature is the ultimate teacher and I a willing pupil. If my paintings can stir some emotion in the viewer, some genuine interest then that will be the measure of my success. The beauty and visual stimulation I experience at a scene is my sole motive for the beginning of my own creative process. I am as figurative in my work as the viewer perceives me to be and as contemporary as new grass in an old Irish soggy field. I define modernism as a frank expression of ones self. While studying art at University in Belfast I found the work of the Northern Irish Painter Humbert Craig quite inspiring. The bold work of the late Tom Thompson from the Canadian Group of Seven has also influenced my own painting style"

There is passion for life itself in his work, a search for authenticity and sincerity in his paintings. He has an understanding of the power of color and tone; a gifted draftsman with a unique style of his own based on keen observation, years of experience and dedication to his craft. Collectors, connoisseurs, discriminating buyers and curators appreciate the technical excellence on view with each new work. His first USA one-man show on the famous Worth Avenue, Palm Beach, Florida saw almost a complete sell out in the first week of the show, with collectors from New York to Paris in attendance.

Hugh O’Neill is an outstanding figure of our time. To fully get to appreciate his talent one only has to view his work. The Artist spends time each year working through locations between Ireland, Europe and the United States. He maintains a working studio in Ireland and USA. O'Neill's work is collected internationally: Several paintings are also published in Print by the prestigious Rosenstiels of Chelsea Green London.

Gallery and Collections include: Lee Gallery Cork Ireland, Private Bank of America in Palm Beach Florida, Miller Gallery in Cincinnati, Marin- Price Gallery Washington, Lorica Art Works in Massachusetts, Posh Gallery Ontario Canada

Lorica Artworks brings together recent work by Irish and American artists who are new to gallery and those well known to our many visitors. Like the harvest gathered after a season of labor, the images in this exhibit yield a bountiful display of subject matter linked to the land.

Both the out of doors painter and the studio artist are fascinated by their immediate surroundings. Each has a deeper understanding of the elusive nature of the energy and reality directly before them. With this knowledge comes an urgency to paint the actual physical world as they observe it directly before them. The things we look at with passive interest become, for the artist with a far-seeing eye, poignant moments of discovery. The resulting work is both a unique and personal representation that resonates with a stunning sense of place.
