Harriet Winchester
The calm, introspective aspect of still life painting inspires my work. I usually set up a few simple objects in a shallow space, and spotlight them to create strong lights and shadows. The pattern of light and shadow becomes part of the composition, and the spotlight helps me to see and paint the highlights, backlights, and edge details that contribute to a threedimensional illusion. Sometimes I choose favorite objects, such as strong, high-shouldered Chinese jars, or antique plates; sometimes the papery texture of onion skins or the dimpled surface of oranges brings delight. Pears and almonds subtly symbolize fertility, and candles may stand for fleeting time. I was drawn to still life paintings even as a teen visiting museums, and was influenced by the blue and orange juxtapositions of Cezanne, the mood and light of Chardin, the illusionism of Peto, and the sparkle of Vermeer. My paintings express, through carefully rendered glowing light and harmonious colors, an appreciation of the beauty of everyday objects. Education:
